Biblical Principles of Money

1. God Owns Everything — We Are Stewards

“The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him.” — Psalm 24:1 (NLT)
Money and possessions belong to God. We are not owners — only managers (stewards).

  • Deuteronomy 8:18 — “He is the one who gives you power to be successful.”

  • 1 Chronicles 29:11–12 — “Everything we have has come from you, and we give you only what you first gave us!”

  • Matthew 25:14–30 — Parable of the talents.

God owns it all; we are called to be good stewards.

2. Money Is a Tool — Not a Master

“No one can serve two masters… You cannot serve both God and money.” — Matthew 6:24
Money is a tool that can serve good or evil, depending on who controls it.

  • 1 Timothy 6:10 — “The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.”

  • Proverbs 11:4 — “Riches won’t help on the day of judgment, but right living can save you from death.”

  • Luke 12:15 — “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed.”

Money is a terrible master but a powerful servant.

3. Generosity Is a Reflection of God’s Character

“The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” — Proverbs 11:25

Generosity mirrors God’s nature.

  • John 3:16 — “For God loved the world so much that he gave…”

  • 2 Corinthians 9:6–8 — “God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”

  • Acts 20:35 — “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

  • Isaiah 32:8 — “Generous people plan to do what is generous.”

    God gives; therefore, we give.

4. Wealth Is a Test of the Heart

“Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” — Matthew 6:21

Money reveals trust, obedience, and priorities.

  • Luke 16:10–11 — “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones.”

  • Proverbs 30:8–9 — “Give me neither poverty nor riches! … Otherwise, I may have too much and deny you.”

  • Malachi 3:10 — “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse … test me in this.”

Money is spiritual — every transaction tests faith and worship.

5. Giving Is Worship

“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.” — Proverbs 3:9

Giving glorifies God. It is the posture of our heart to worship.

  • Genesis 4:4 — Abel offered the best portion.

  • Leviticus 27:30 — “A tenth… must be set apart to him as holy.”

  • Mark 12:41–44 — The widow’s two coins.

    Giving is worship in motion.

6. Money Is for the Building of God’s House and the Blessing of the World

“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple.” — Malachi 3:10

Money is sacred when used to advance God’s Kingdom:

Build the church, Bless the city, nation, and world.

  • Numbers 18:21 — Levites’ livelihood.

  • 1 Corinthians 9:13–14 — Support for those preaching the Gospel.

  • Acts 2:44–47 — Early church shared possessions.

  • Philippians 4:15–17 — Church giving to support missionaries.

Money exists for mission and blessing.

7. Wealth Brings Responsibility, Not Entitlement

“To whom much is given, much will be required.” — Luke 12:48

Wealth = responsibility to bless others.

  • 1 Timothy 6:17–19 — “Use your money to do good. … Be rich in good works.”

  • James 5:1–3 — Warning to hoarders.

  • Proverbs 19:17 — Helping the poor is lending to the Lord.

    Impact matters more than accumulation.

8. Eternal Perspective: You Can’t Take It with You

“Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.” — Luke 12:21

Invest in eternal treasures.

  • Matthew 6:19–20 — Store treasures in heaven.

  • 1 Timothy 6:7 — We bring nothing into the world.

  • Hebrews 13:5 — Be satisfied with what you have.

Earthly wealth is temporary; eternal treasure lasts.

9. Contentment Is Greater Than Wealth

“True godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.” — 1 Timothy 6:6

Contentment > accumulation.

  • Philippians 4:11–13 — Learn contentment.

  • Hebrews 13:5 — Be satisfied.

  • Proverbs 15:16 — Little with God’s fear is better than much with turmoil.

Contentment is a mark of true riches in Christ.

10. God Uses Money to Shape Hearts and Build His Kingdom
Faithful handling of resources trains us for leadership and mission.

  • Luke 16:10–12 — Faithfulness in small things leads to more.

  • Malachi 3:10–12 — God promises provision for faithfulness.

  • Matthew 25:21 — Faithfulness leads to increased responsibility.

Money forms character and advances God’s Kingdom.

Why 10%?

1. The Tithe Is God’s Standard for Stewardship

“A tenth of all you produce belongs to the Lord; it is holy.” — Leviticus 27:30

10% represents God’s measure to teach trust, obedience, and dependence.

  • Genesis 14:20 — Abraham gave a tenth.

  • Numbers 18:21 — Levites received tithes.

  • Malachi 3:10 — God challenges His people to bring the full tithe.

Tithe is God’s standard for giving first.

2. The Tithe Honors God First and with the best

“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.” — Proverbs 3:9

Giving first demonstrates God comes first and He comes before comfort or accumulation. He deserves the best.

  • Genesis 4:4 — Abel gave first and best.

  • Deuteronomy 26:2 — Firstfruits dedicated to God.

  • Matthew 23:23 — Jesus affirmed tithing while emphasizing justice.

Tithing prioritizes God above everything else.

3. The Tithe Supports God’s Work and Leaders

“Those who preach the Good News should be supported by those who benefit from it.” — 1 Corinthians 9:14

Funds build the church, and fund the mission.

  • Numbers 18:21 — Levites’ inheritance.

  • Philippians 4:15–17 — Supporting missionaries.

  • Malachi 3:10 — Blessing promised for tithing.

Tithes fuel Kingdom work throughout the world.

4. The Tithe Cultivates Faith and Trust

“Test me in this… see if I will not open the windows of heaven.” — Malachi 3:10

Giving 10% grows faith, dependence, and obedience.

  • Luke 6:38 — Giving returns blessings.

  • 2 Corinthians 9:6–7 — Cheerful giving honors God.

Tithing aligns our heart with eternal priorities.

  • Matthew 6:19–20 — Store treasures in heaven.
